Sometimes it’s the smallest decisions that can change your life forever — Keri Russell
The decisions we make will dictate the lives we live. Decisions are very important in designing the life you want and living the life you imagine. To decide means to choose between what you will do and not do, resolving where you want to focus your attention and energy, being selective about what you put in your mind and the pictures you paint on the canvas of your mind, and erecting what you build on the lot life has given you.
Countless people are stuck in a rut because they have failed to make the decision to change and transform for better results. Some are stuck in a relationship that is not going anywhere, but they have failed to make the decision to get out and get a life. Others are stuck in a business that is draining their energy and is not profitable except that they say they like what they are doing. I have a relative named Alice (not her real name), who is in the merchandising business. On the face of it, it looks like a great business, but the margins are very low. It also requires tight supervision to avoid pilferage. My relative knows that the business is not sustainable but has not come to the point of decision to let it go and do something else.
Are you in a situation right now where you know that the business you are running is not going to work, but you have been procrastinating because of indecision? Are you in an abusive relationship but afraid to get out because of the unknown? Are you working in a job you hate but are afraid to leave because you feel you will not get a better job? Take your mind off the negative and focus on the possibilities. Why waste the life you were given on something or someone who is not going to take you where you want to go?
A decision, no matter how small it may seem, can change the trajectory of your life. Just make the decision will you? It will free you to design the life you want. First, we make the decision and second, we commit to the decision. Are you one of those people who come up with New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, read a book a week, put away a part of your income every month as savings, drink so many glasses of water a day, and be a vegan four days of the week? How far did you go with these decisions? It takes commitment to follow through on decisions. When you back up your decisions with a commitment, you will surely achieve your goals.
Commitment to your decisions, no matter the detours, will lead you closer to your goals. When I made the decision years ago to design the life I want, I encountered numerous challenges along the way. My decision was solid and I knew what I wanted. I had no reservations whatsoever in my mind regarding what I wanted in life, so I did not experience doubt about whether I was on the right track or not. Though the decision was solid, it had to be backed up by commitment to do the things I needed to do. I took progressive, result-oriented actions, changed the way I used to think, and invested significantly in life-changing resources to bring me to where I am today. The commitment to invest ten percent of my monthly income in myself has paid off and continues to pay off. Make the decision, support it with a strong commitment and voila — you will be on your way to success. Decision plus commitment equals success.
