I am very fascinated with the subject of thought and thinking. I am a student of the mind and will continue as a student for a very long time. We cannot exhaust the study of the mind and the impact of our thoughts on the results we get. Your mind is a gold mine! All the things you will ever achieve in your lifetime begin from your mind. Your mind holds the key to all the possibilities and opportunities available to you. You can use your mind to create, innovate, and achieve phenomenal results beyond your wildest imagination. I believe our school system has failed millions of people for not teaching people how to think. I believe any school that has a subject on thinking and the effective use of the mind will produce more successful and high achieving people than others focusing on the normal curriculum.
“Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; actions form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny.” – Tryon Edwards
The more I study the mind, the more there is to discover. I encourage you to be a student of the mind. It will not only intrigue, energize, invigorate, or inspire you, but will open your mind to the possibilities that lies within you. If you can master the effective use of your mind, your results will be staggering! Do not explore the power of the mind for the sake of just understanding how it functions, but rather use it to change your life, inspire others to change, and use it to influence and impact the direction of your life. What are you using your mind for? The great discoveries and inventions of our time started in someone’s mind. The changes and transformation in society began with a few thinking people. The automobiles we drive, the aeroplanes we fly in from place to place all started as an idea. What ideas do you have that you have not yet brought to life? What great pictures have you painted on the canvass of your mind that you have kept just as a fantasy? Eknath Easwaran said, “The things we think about, brood on, dwell on, and exult over influence our life in a thousand ways. When we can actually choose the direction of our thoughts instead of just letting them run along the grooves of conditioned thinking, we become the masters of our own lives.”
You can influence your personal results by your thinking and you can also ruin your chances of success by what you think about most of the time. I have countless stories of people swimming in the back waters of poverty and living average lives by the way they think. Some believe that someone closest to them is causing them to fail. There is a belief in some quarters of the world that a lack of success or achievement in some homes and individuals are a result of evil spirits. Lazy people hide under this belief and waste their lives. Life is too short to let it slip away with excuses. It is a travesty to relinquish the leadership of your life to false beliefs, people, systems, and others when you can and should take control of your life. Hear me and hear me good; you can change the direction of your life by changing the way you think and what you think about. Many lives have been destroyed because of erroneous thinking. Have you thought about what you are thinking about lately? Do you think about what you are thinking about? Your success or failure is hidden in your thinking patterns! When you change your thinking you sure can change your results. It all starts with thought! The Bible recommends how to think and what to think about. It says, “Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious – the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse…”
There are a number of people who allow the environment or the external to determine and influence how they think. The environment should just be your looking glass and not determine how you behave and the results you get. William James captures this well in this quote: “Why should we think upon things that are lovely? Because thinking determines life. It is a common habit to blame life upon the environment. Environment modifies life but does not govern life. The soul is stronger than its surroundings.”
